Case Study

bio-bean Ltd

bio-bean Ltd is an award-winning clean technology company, the first company in the world to have industrialised the process of recycling waste coffee grounds into advanced biofuels.

Consumption of coffee has increased rapidly over recent decades and forecasts anticipate this growth to continue. Each year 500kT of waste coffee grounds are sent to landfill, anaerobic digestors and incinerators in the UK with a disposal cost of c.£80m and emitting millions of tonnes in CO2 emissions. bio-bean provides both cost-effective, locally-sourced, sustainable fuels and, with partners in the waste management industry, provides cost-effective, responsible waste collection and disposal.

With investment from Ignite, bio-bean will double the size of their factory in Cambridgeshire, expand their team and continue to undertake R&D into additional sustainable products derived from waste coffee grounds.

bio-bean is seeking to improve the condition of our environment by reducing carbon emissions, diverting waste from landfill or incineration, and creating sustainable fuels to displace fossil fuels and imported woody biomass. Also, through job creation and funded research, bio-bean is creating economic benefits.
